ABOUT
Carmen Sabbatini
I´m Carmen, I was born in Argentina in May 1972 and was raised in Buenos Aires. When I was eight years old I made an apron for my mother out of a red and white checkered dress that was too small for me. Without realizing it I had made my first upcycled garment and my passion for clothes was born.
I was reborn in Milan with the new millenium designing for the most prestigious Italian fashion houses and companies kidswear, underwear and swimwear collections.
After a period of disenchantment with fashion I worked and still work in art projects supporting my husband. During the Covid pandemic I reconnected with my imprinting of renewing, mending and reinventing my own clothes. Upcycling has become a personal quest.
With this specific mindset, my interest for sustainable, ethical and responsible fashion has become the key to reinsert myself in this industry.
“Maturity can be a genuine advantage… in fact, in any discipline where experience plays a significant role, age is an asset rather than liability.”
— Ken Robinson
I have spent half of my life in Buenos Aires and half in Milan. My vision of design is rooted in my Latin American origins deeply intertwined with Italian style. These two parts, Argentinian and Italian, embraces two different points of view. One derives from a culture that used to work with few resources in fashion, compelling me to become very practical and concrete in my work. The other viewpoint is from a culture that invented the fashion system turning me into a creative and highly skilled designer.
Fashion in Europe is nearing its end as we know it (UNEP’s report ‘Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile Value Chain - UN's 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development). This prompts me towards being extremely fashion conscious and makes me see my work from a sustainable perspective. There is no other possibility for this transition to circular fashion.
